Wow. I remember walking past movie theaters in Chicago during the early Sixties when this film was released. It's just a grand, superior example of the art of illustration communicating the excitement of the movies. The sheer dynamism of the composition is irresistible: the dark, turbulent sky, the raking beams of the searchlights, all backgrounding the snaking line of the escapees flung into the foreground, their faces tense, alert, terrified. Jesus, you can hear the sirens wailing, the military drumming on the soundtrack, and your father looking down at you, smiling and saying, ''You wanna go in and see this, son?''

Frank McCarthy's work was simply brilliant as I'm sure he was. I do hope his original efforts have been kept in a safe place for all to experience one day when everyone wishes to get closer and try to understand the strokes this great artisan took so many hours and days to create.
